Polar bears have been considered to be Vulnerable (criteria A3c) since 2006. The first updated assessment, published in 2008, was criticized for an purportedly insufficient documentation of the links between habitat change and population change. In 2014 the PBSG thus launched a major effort in trying to address these problems, and the new assessment was accepted by reviewers in 2015.
